Free Music From Yahoo
May 31, 2005
Chapin Information Services (C.I.S.) discovered a major exploit today in Yahoo's new beta music service. This exploit will allow users to download music for free. This service just opened two weeks ago. Free trials are available for seven days, and premium subscriptions are being offered for $4.99 per month.
Normally a customer would pay 79 cents for each music file they download. But according to the C.I.S. users could download the music without the Digital Rights Management protection using standard internet tools.
"For a savvy Internet user, the flaws in this music system could make it easier to download the music for free than it is to pay for the same file," said Robert Chapin, President of CIS.
C.I.S. says thats standard internet equipment with a standard account was used to find the exploit. Of course Yahoo has not yet acknowledge the C.I.S. security report.
