Yahoo Updates User Profiles
June 28, 2005
Some of you may have been experiencing problems viewing yahoo messenger profiles over the last week or so. I know I was. Well it seems that the problems with them was cause because Yahoo was updating there profiles appearance. Sometime yesterday Yahoo updated them.
You can no longer choose your own color scheme. Which to me isn't really a big deal anyways. The few schemes they did have were terrible. It looks as if Yahoo is going for a more uniformed look.
I have seen a few people complain lately that there is no way to add your photos and briefcases. This is not a problem. If you go to your profile and scroll down to the bottom you will see a line that reads "On Yahoo! Edit" (make sure you are signed into that account first) A click of the edit link will allow you to add photos, briefcase, calendar, auctions, games, and clubs.
Yahoo Removes User Rooms
June 23, 2005
The popular chat client removed the rooms from the public directory after a T.V. studio in Houston (KPRC-TV) made a report of some of the user created rooms titles and things going on in them. In thier report men were doing lewd acts on there cams sending the images to minors in rooms with titles like "Younger Girls 4 Older Guys" and "Girls 13 And Under For Older Guys." KPRC-TV found these rooms listed as educational rooms. Before entering some of these rooms guest were required to click a Star Wars Pepsi ad.
Yahoo had to do somthing as some of thier major sponsorship started pulling thier ad's and filing complaints. Company's like Pepsi, Georgia-Pacific, State Farm Insurance, and Countrywide Mortgage are now no longer associated with Yahoo. These online ad's had boosted Yahoo's income up to $205 million. Yahoo is now facing a $10 million dollar lawsuit as they are being acused of cashing in on these user created rooms.
Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako said, "How long the chat rooms that allegedly promoted sex with minors have operated is unclear. Yahoo does not monitor the content in the chat rooms, but will close a room if it receives complaints".
"We encourage users to notify us when they believe content is in violation of our terms of service," Osako also said.
I know alot of you maybe wondering when the rooms will come back or if they ever will. Well for now they are actually still there. The rooms are just not listed in the public directory. If you know the name of the room you can simply type /join ROOMNAME
UPDATE: /join ROOMNAME no longer works. It looks like the user rooms are gone all together now...
Yahoo Avatars Firefox Friendly
June 29, 2005
When Yahoo first came out with its 6.0 version using avatars in april 2004 you could only customize them using Internet Explorer (I.E.). Later that year Mozilla released its first full version of Firefox. Since then Firefox has taken a huge share of the market away from I.E. In febuary Yahoo started to show its support by releasing a toolbar for Firefox. A month later Yahoo announced that they would make all of thier services including avatars available in both browsers, but no date was givin.
"Due to the explosive popularity of the Firefox browser, it has now been added to our suite of browsers to test our products against. All new products that Yahoo develops will be tested against Firefox," a Yahoo representative said.
Quietly Yahoo has updated its services. You can now customize your avatars in Firefox. This comes 3 months after Yahoo made the announcement. I for one applaude Yahoo for doing this. It is a smart move by Yahoo and great backing for Firefox and its users.
Free Music From Yahoo
May 31, 2005
Chapin Information Services (C.I.S.) discovered a major exploit today in Yahoo's new beta music service. This exploit will allow users to download music for free. This service just opened two weeks ago. Free trials are available for seven days, and premium subscriptions are being offered for $4.99 per month.
Normally a customer would pay 79 cents for each music file they download. But according to the C.I.S. users could download the music without the Digital Rights Management protection using standard internet tools.
"For a savvy Internet user, the flaws in this music system could make it easier to download the music for free than it is to pay for the same file," said Robert Chapin, President of CIS.
C.I.S. says thats standard internet equipment with a standard account was used to find the exploit. Of course Yahoo has not yet acknowledge the C.I.S. security report.
