This tutorial was written using Macromedia Fireworks 8. It will show you the steps needed to create a fog effect, which can be usefull for many projects.
Step 01.

Creat a new document of 350 x 350, and select a black canvas. Select the brush tool, with a size of about 19, and pick the color #999999. Scribble some on the canvas as shown:

Then select it, set its opacity to about 60. And on the filters, select Gaussian blur, and set its radius high enough to make a blur.. I used 21. Your settings should show as such:
